Approved Product Types

Why product types matter

Product types tell shoppers what kind of resource they are purchasing and help Shopify organize items in menus, filters, and reports.

Choosing the correct product type keeps listings clear, reduces returns, and ensures your curriculum appears where families expect to find it.

When types overlap

If more than one product type seems to fit, use the type that has the majority influence on the book or educational item.

For example, if a resource is mostly a student text with a few practice pages, treat it as a Textbook, not a general workbook.

Core rules for choosing a product type

Consistent storewide standards
  • Use only the product types listed on this page unless leadership has approved a new type in advance.
  • Pick the single best product type based on the preponderance of detail, not a mix of several options.
  • Remember that “Curriculum” means a publisher or series with lessons, tests, workbooks, and teacher guides, not just any educational book.

Product type is different from tags. Product type is the main category for an item in the First Homeschool store page, while tags provide added detail such as subject, grade, and condition.
