First Homeschool Bookstore is a family-owned homeschool curriculum store in Springdale, Arkansas, offering both new and used homeschool curriculum, literature, educational supplies, learning kits, and resources for families across the United States. Our mission is simple: enable homeschoolers around the country to homeschool with confidence.

Our story
From Public Education to a Family Homeschool Bookstore
First Homeschool grew out of Gregory Melvin's background as a former school principal and special education teacher with 14 years of public-school experience. During the COVID era, he also worked in school leadership connected with a homeschool program that experienced a sudden surge in enrollment. That season deepened his understanding of the practical needs families face when choosing curriculum and educating children at home.
After deciding to leave public education, an unexpected opportunity appeared: a homeschool bookstore in Arkansas was for sale. With God's grace playing a meaningful role in how the opportunity came together, our family purchased the former Homeschool Central in July 2024.
We relocated the business from North Little Rock to Springdale, Arkansas, where access to families throughout Northwest Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and beyond made sense for a growing regional and nationwide homeschool store. We opened our Springdale location in January 2025 under a new name: First Homeschool Bookstore.
That idea is at the heart of our name. We believe parents begin teaching their children from the very first days of life. Homeschooling is not the right fit for every family, just as public or private school is not the right fit for every family. But regardless of the educational path a family chooses, parents remain deeply entrusted with the formation, teaching, and development of their children.

Our Christian faith is part of our family's story and values. We are grateful for God's grace in the path that brought First Homeschool to Springdale, and we want our store to reflect service, hospitality, stewardship, and care for families. At the same time, we welcome families from many backgrounds and carry both faith-based and secular curriculum. Our role is to help families understand their options and find resources that fit their educational goals.
Our family purchased the former Homeschool Central bookstore.

More Than Used Books on a Shelf
There are many places to purchase used curriculum. We work to distinguish First Homeschool by giving families more context and more ways to find the right material before they buy.
On our online store, we take great care to organize curriculum using useful information and filters whenever available, including:

- subject area
- publisher and curriculum line
- edition and publication year when known
- price range
- format, type, and related curriculum details
When families visit us in person, they can physically look through curriculum, compare books and bundles, and ask questions before deciding what fits their homeschool.
Educational Experience Behind the Store
Gregory's experience as a former school principal and special education teacher provides a practical education background for helping families think through curriculum choices. That knowledge continues to grow as we work with new materials, publish curriculum content, create tutorials, and learn directly from homeschool families.
Ava Melvin
Ava Yuan Xue Melvin brings a background in nutrition and business to our family business. Together, Gregory and Ava are raising four children while operating First Homeschool as a small family-owned store.

Families are welcome to browse curriculum in person. We also have a children's play area in the back of the store so children can enjoy themselves while parents browse, and we offer printing services for homeschool families.
Affordable homeschooling
Helping Families Stretch Their Curriculum Budget
Brand-new homeschool curriculum can be expensive. One reason we carry used materials is to make quality curriculum accessible to more families. At the same time, some families prefer new materials, so we intentionally carry both whenever possible rather than limiting families to only one option.
Our Book Buyback Program also helps keep curriculum circulating. Families can submit used homeschool curriculum for review and, when accepted, choose between a cash offer or store credit. Store credit can be especially useful for stretching a homeschool budget toward the next set of books and resources.

Supporting Homeschool Families, Co-ops, Microschools, and Local Creators
First Homeschool supports local homeschool co-ops, microschools, homeschool fairs, book sales, community events, and local publishers whenever possible. We consider locally produced books and educational items on a case-by-case basis and actively sell selected local products in our store.
We believe anyone can learn how to homeschool, and our goal is to help empower families through affordable materials, practical information, curriculum insight, and a welcoming place to ask questions.
